The UK’s farming sector has continued its strong support for Farm Africa’s work – this time by staging a cricket tournament fundraiser.
Four teams from across the sector gathered yesterday in the beautiful surroundings of Trinity College Cambridge’s cricket ground to see who would win the tournament which was organised by Farmcare – previously Co-operative Farms.
Farmcare were joined by Agrovista UK, a company that supplies agronomy advice and crop protection services, the National Farmers Union (NFU) and CLAAS UK, a worldwide manufacturer of agricultural engineering equipment.
The teams raised a hugely impressive total of over £5,500 to help support our life-changing work in eastern Africa.
Competition was intense in the morning with Farmcare beating the NFU in a hard-fought first game.
Unfortunately, driving rain arrived after lunch, preventing a conclusion to the second game between CLAAS UK and Agrovista. Teams headed for the pavilion where a host of stunning prizes were auctioned off, including an England cricket shirt signed by England captain Alastair Cook, a bat signed by the victorious 2013 Ashes-winning England side and a signed England team photo.
And spirits were kept high throughout the day, despite the rain, thanks to a beautiful tea and sumptuous hog roast. The cricketers were also fascinated to hear first-hand about Farm Africa’s work In Ethiopia from our Ethiopia Communications Officer, Samrawit Sintayehu, who has been spending time in the UK office and who had travelled up to Cambridge for the tournament.
