Farm Africa to benefit from sale of Sainsbury’s green beans

For up to three weeks from 16 September, Sainsbury’s will support Farm Africa through the sale of green beans in its stores across the UK.
For every pack of Sainsbury’s fine green beans and Taste the Difference extra fine green beans sold, the retailer will donate 10p to Farm Africa.
This marks the third year the retailer has partnered with Farm Africa in this way, having raised a total of £200,000 for the charity in their green bean promotions in 2024 and 2025.
This year, Sainsbury’s aims to match last year’s success by raising £100,000 for Farm Africa’s work supporting farmers across eastern Africa to grow and sell more, while protecting the environment for generations to come.
The beans were grown by farmers in Kenya, one of the countries where Farm Africa works to support smallholder farmers to improve the quality, quantity and value of the crops they grow.

Farm Africa supports farmers in Kenya to take a business approach to farming and grow crops that are in high demand, like green beans, so they can increase their incomes.
Thanks to their popularity, green beans give farmers the chance to build profitable farming business and secure a better life for their families.
Supporting young people and women like Lilian, pictured below, is central to Farm Africa’s work. Lilian grows green beans in Saboti County in western Kenya and supports other farmers in her community to improve their horticultural production and build links to export and domestic vegetable buyers.

Every week, the 200 farmers Lilian supports produce three tonnes of green beans, which are sold to the export buyer Vegpro. Lilian makes a commission from these sales, which helps her to buy household necessities.
Commenting on the impact of Farm Africa’s support, Lilian said:
“I thank Farm Africa so much. If I could be the person like our donor, then I would say, ‘Oh please, just let them continue doing what they’re doing because so many lives will change.’”
