For the next three weeks, Sainsbury’s will support Farm Africa through the sale of green beans in its stores across the UK.
The retailer will donate 10p to Farm Africa per pack of by Sainsbury’s fine green beans and Taste the Difference extra fine green beans sold.
Through the sales, Sainsbury’s aims to raise £100,000 for Farm Africa’s work supporting farmers across eastern Africa to grow and sell more, while protecting the environment for generations to come.
The beans were grown by farmers in Kenya, one of the countries where Farm Africa works to support small-scale farmers to adopt sustainable agriculture practices, so they can increase the quality and quantity of the produce they grow.
Alongside offering technical advice on growing climate-resilient crops, Farm Africa supports farmers in Kenya to adopt a business approach to farming so they can increase their incomes.
Green beans are a vegetable that are in high demand, offering farmers who grow them the opportunity to develop profitable farming enterprises that offer their families a brighter future.
Farm Africa prioritises support for young people and women, like Susan, pictured below, who harvests green beans in western Kenya.
Susan commented:
“I can harvest 60 kg a day. I can now raise money quickly to pay for my children’s school fees. It used to be hard to pay my children’s school fees.
“Previously, my children used to stay home for whole terms at a time, but now they are in constantly in school. Their performance at school has improved. If this work continues, I see a good life. I am happy now the beans go for export as it has created employment for me.”
