Staff spotlight: Elizabeth Kalema

Elizabeth works as a Sorghum Value Chain Officer with the NOURISH project, funded by Norad and led by SNV in partnership with Farm Africa, in Tanzania. She supports farmers to improve sorghum production and strengthen their livelihoods.

What is your role?

My role involves working directly with farmers. I share the nutritional benefits of sorghum and I support farmers to adapt to climate change and improve their farming techniques. I also help strengthen their business and financial skills.

What do you like most about your role?

That I get to engage with farmers directly to understand their challenges and needs, and identify how best I can support them. In different districts and regions farmers have diverse needs, culture, norms and attitudes. This requires me to adapt my approach and style to build strong relationships with farmers.

How has Farm Africa changed whilst you’ve worked here?

For the three years that I’ve been with Farm Africa, the organisation has grown and expanded its reach to support more farmers across different regions. And Farm Africa’s reputation is growing among farmers and other stakeholders.

And what’s your proudest moment at Farm Africa?

When I helped a group of women with disabilities in Chemba District establish a sustainable source of income. Chemba District’s weather is challenging, particularly during the off-season. I supported the group to start poultry farming. The women could then generate income during the off-season,
strengthening their livelihoods. What makes me particularly proud is that the group has continued, showing it was beneficial and sustainable.

What message would you like to share with Farm Africa supporters?

I’d like to tell them that we truly appreciate what they’re doing to support farmers through us. Their continued support is making meaningful difference in farmers’ lives and livelihoods. Please keep supporting us and most importantly farmers to create sustainable and lasting impact.
