Mount Elgon Challenge 2018

On 26 January 2018,13 leading food industry experts left the UK to face a gruelling seven-day hike up and across Mount Elgon, an extinct volcano that straddles the Uganda-Kenya border, on a route that had never been walked before. The team trekked through thick montane forest, deep gorges and up Mount Elgon’s four peaks, to take on the challenge of a lifetime and to raise funds for Farm Africa.

Along the way, the team visited Farm Africa projects in both Uganda and Kenya, providing them with the opportunity to see first-hand how the money they raised will positively impact the lives of farming families.

At the start of the trip, they visited a project helping Ugandan farmers to harvest, process and store orange-fleshed sweet potatoes so they can earn more from their agricultural efforts.

To wrap up their trip, the team visited the Growing Futures project, which helps young Kenyan farmers build profitable horticulture businesses.
