Carol concert raises record-breaking £9,400
Farm Africa’s annual carol concert, Fables and Festivities, which was held at St Magnus the Church in the City of London last night, has raised a record £9,400 for the charity’s work helping farmers in eastern Africa to grow their way out of poverty.
Guests enjoyed spectacular performances from three choirs: the Wimbledon Youth Choir, Pram Chorus and the African Gospel Choir, and a number of inspirational addresses from Farm Africa’s supporters.
Travel journalist and broadcaster Simon Calder spoke about his family’s tradition of exchanging donations to Farm Africa to help fund goats in eastern Africa instead of presents.
Kate Adie OBE gave the main address, reflecting on how often farming in Africa is associated with poverty, but how an investment in agriculture could turn around life in rural Africa, helping families to thrive.
Revd Steve Tash recapped highlights from the epic Farm Africa ‘talk marathon’ he took part in this year to celebrate his 60th birthday.
Laketch Mikael, a Farm Africa trustee, Senior Director for Sustainable and Inclusive Growth at the Ethiopia Agricultural Transformation Agency and Ethiopian national, also gave an insight into agriculture’s vital role in economic development in Ethiopia.
The evening wrapped up with mulled wine and mince pies generously supplied by Aldi Stores Ltd.
Many thanks to all our speakers and choirs, to St Magnus the Martyr Church for hosting us, and to everyone who so generously donated.
