Nuneka Yasin lives with his wife and four children in Halaba, Ethiopia, an area prone to drought. Nuneka has been working with Farm Africa to grow peppers, which can thrive even in dry land.
Before his involvement with Farm Africa, Nuneka had been using traditional farming methods, for example scattering his seeds over a wide area in the hope that this would yield the best results. Farm Africa has been training Nuneka in new farming techniques to help him earn more.
"Farm Africa gave me training on how to prepare the seeds and sow them in rows with space between the rows. They grow much more quickly now."
With new methods of sowing his pepper seeds increasing the size of his harvest, Nuneka has more peppers to sell at market. He also separates his peppers into different grades, so that he can sell higher quality produce for a higher price. With the increase in his income, Nuneka not only provides enough food for his family, but is able to send his son Abdulaziz to school, much to his delight:
"I like going to school, I am very happy to go to school. When I grow up I want to be a doctor."
