The Bale Eco-Region Management Programme (BERSMP) is a joint initiative between Farm Africa and SOS Sahel Ethiopia. The programme has been operating since the end of 2006. It aims to bring local communities into a central role is sustainable natural resources management supported by government services across the whole Bale massif. (October 2007)

The Bale Mountains are among the world’s leading biodiversity hotspots, containing different ecological zones including moist tropical forest, afro-alpine habitats, woodlands, grasslands, wetlands and a large percentage of Ethiopia’s endemic plants and animals. It is also one of the areas in Ethiopia where a lack of proper natural resources management is threatening these unique resources as well as the water supply to an estimated 12 million people living downstream. New technologies can increase agricultural production and improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in East Africa. But technology alone is not enough. Seven projects supported by FARM-Africa’s Mandeleo Agricultural Technology Fund (MATF) were studied to learn what else has to be in place for new technologies to be taken up by farmers. (May 2007)

In Tanzania, the Nou JFM project is a collaboration between forest communities and the government’s Forestry and Beekeeping Division (FBD) of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism. The project aims to conserve a catchment forest of national importance. (July 2007)
