Learn how farmers in Tigray, Ethiopia are growing themselves out of hunger for good.

“Before the children would get depressed because of their hunger, and physically they were thin...now they have gained weight and are happier.” Letay Gebre-Michael.

A Farm Africa project designed to tackle hunger and increase the income of families in Ethiopia’s Tigray region is transforming the lives of farmers and their families.

Tigray in northern Ethiopia is an area with high levels of poverty and malnutrition. In the central region of Tigray, where Farm Africa’s project is located, over half of children under five years of age show signs of stunting.

Through the project, local women and youths like Letay Gebre-Michael are learning how to rear goats to provide a source of nutrition and income, keep bees and how to grow fruit and vegetables which fetch a good price at market.

This project, which Farm Africa’s Patron Michael Palin visited in 2013, featured in the Guardian newspaper’s 2013 charity Christmas appeal. Thanks to public support for Farm Africa’s work, the UK government was able to double the money that Guardian readers raised which helped the charity to grow its work with families in Tigray.
