Honeywell Biscuit Co. announces charity partnership with Farm Africa

Today, on National Biscuit Day, Honeywell Biscuit Co., artisan biscuit bakers based in Welford, Northamptonshire, has announced a new partnership with Farm Africa. The company will donate 2% of the purchase price of each of their products to support our work helping farmers in eastern Africa grow more, sell more and sell for more.

The artisan company uses traditional baking methods to combine the ingredients and test new recipes. Each biscuit is hand cut using specially selected cookie cutters from their collection of over 2000 shapes, and is then iced by an expert team.

The all-female company chose to support Farm Africa due to the charity’s pioneering work empowering female entrepreneurs living in rural communities to run thriving businesses. In sub-Saharan Africa, 80% of agricultural production is by smallholder farmers. And the female share of the agricultural labour force is the highest in the world.

But life for women in rural Africa isn’t easy. Women don’t have the same rights as men, and often have to juggle domestic duties and agricultural work - sowing, weeding and harvesting crops, but also making food for their families and collecting firewood and water.

It can be much harder for women to yield the same results on their farms as men do, as they often have more limited access to land, agricultural extension services and technologies. Farm Africa works to help women overcome the obstacles holding them back from succeeding as agricultural entrepreneurs.

Charlotte Senior, Corporate Partnerships Manager at Farm Africa commented:

“At Farm Africa we’re passionate about empowering women in rural communities. Women’s empowerment has benefits for the whole family. An investment in women is also an investment in the next generation. When women prosper, they tend to invest more in their children’s educations and giving their children more nutritious food and keeping them healthy.”

Rebecca Honeywell-Ward, Founder of Honeywell Biscuit Co. commented:

“Farm Africa is a perfect fit with our values – helping families grow their own food in a sustainable way, and enabling them to start small businesses selling their produce as well.”
