Help a farmer like Momima establish a poultry farming business and transform their family's future

In Halaba district, Ethiopia, it is a daily struggle for farmers like Momima to provide for their families. With little land and few livestock, many families are trapped in a cycle of poverty.

Like Momima, each of the women taking part in our project has been dependent on a government work scheme for survival – earning just enough to cover their families’ day-to-day costs, but never enough to invest in their futures. The scheme offers a short-term lifeline for the struggling farmers, but it only runs for six months of each year and doesn’t offer families like Momima’s a permanent route out of poverty.

A Chicken Starter Kit can help change all of this. After joining our chicken project, Momima received ten chickens, training in how to feed and care for them and the materials needed to build a chicken coop. Most importantly, Momima has been given the chance to escape poverty.

She is already selling some of the eggs her chickens produce to buy food for herself and her children. Momima is hoping that, as time goes on, she will be able to use the training she received from Farm Africa to hatch some of the eggs and increase the size of her brood. And wth a steady source of income from her chickens, Momima has been able to join the Village Savings and Loans Association (VSLA) that Farm Africa has set up in her community. Like all the members, in time, Momima will be able to take out a small loan to invest in growing her chicken farming business.

What is in a Chicken Starter Kit?

Each woman involved in our project in Halaba receives training from our expert staff and is then given a Chicken Starter Kit, containing all they need to build a successful business in poultry farming:

10 three-month-old chickens £38
30 days’ supply of feed £13
Materials to build a chicken coop £29 (listed right)
