It's a clean sweep in Pittsburgh as Shaan Fye and his team raise $1,170 with their garden clean-up!

After raising $1,170 for Farm Africa USA last year, Shady Side Academy student Shann Fye is looking forward to his next round of fall fundraising.

Motivated by his experience of working on his school farm, Shaan was looking for an opportunity to raise money for a cause that aligned with his own passion for nutritious food and sustainable agriculture.

“Working at the Shady Side Academy Farm, as well as managing the local farmers’ market has allowed me to see every step of sustainable agriculture and business. I realized that improving others’ access to food would allow me to follow my passion. At the same time I could be helping others build a healthier future. It was a win-win.”

As fall rolled around, Shaan and a team of high-school volunteers from around Pittsburgh offered their local community a ‘name-your-price garden clean-up’. For three weeks, Shaan’s team worked to clean up the gardens of Pittsburgh, with all proceeds from their efforts going straight to Farm Africa USA.

“The clean-up went really well; I was surprised and pleased to see the immense support of our local community”

The project managed to raise over $1,170 for Farm Africa USA, and raised awareness in the local area about the farmers this money would help. Continuing to spread the word, Shaan has recently written an article for The Atlas Business Journal discussing how sharing knowledge can help eastern Africa’s farmers grow themselves out of poverty and help end hunger forever.

Shaan is now looking to build on the achievements of last year and is planning his second round of fundraising for Farm Africa USA.

“After the success of last year, a lot of younger students wanted to help do something this year. Based on last year, I can only see improvement from here!”

We wish Shaan and his team all the best with their fundraising efforts this fall. If you’d like to read Shaan’s article on the importance of sustainable agriculture, click here.
