Spice production and marketing

We trained farmers with small plots of land to grow high-value ginger and chilli pepper crops. We trained farmers with small plots of land to grow high-value ginger and chilli pepper crops.

With only small amounts of land to grow food on, poor families in southern Ethiopia face a struggle to feed themselves. Farm Africa worked with communities to expand the production of ginger and chilli, which require little land to grow on.

By providing basic processing and storage we helped farmers make the most from their harvests with the aim of enabling farmers to export their fair trade spices.

We also provided basic support such as chickens to help families with no livestock or land lift themselves out of poverty.

Our work sat alongside Ethiopian government programmes to reduce hunger in the Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Region (SNNPR).

The work included:

  • training farmers with small plots of land to grow ginger and chilli pepper. We provided farmers with improved seed varieties and warehouses as well as basic processing facilities for farmers’ groups.
  • helping farmers and families who struggled to access credit set up small businesses using village savings and loans schemes
  • establishing better links between farmers and private sector spice processors and exporters
  • training extremely poor women to manage poultry businesses

Who did we help?

Farm Africa worked with households in the Hadero and Halaba districts of SNNPR, focusing particularly on women.
