Will you give a gift today and help farmers like Paul grow a prosperous future for their families?

For many young people living in Kenya's Kitale district, it is a daily struggle to provide for their families. With high rates of unemployment and little agricultural knowledge, many find themselves trapped in a cycle of poverty.

That's where Farm Africa comes in. Our project in Kitale is focussing on helping young people – like Paul – to find a way to earn money for their families through farming. Despite working hard on the land his family gave him, Paul was unable to provide for his young family. When we first met Paul, he told us: "What I hate is living a life that is hopeless." Unable to grow enough to support his family, and with no alternative employment opportunities, Paul was trapped in a cycle of poverty.

Last year, Paul and his neighbour set up a farmers' group called the Sinyereri Youth Shapers and they soon became a part of our project. Firstly, we trained them in key business skills and how to organise the group. And then we helped them identify the best crops to grow and linked them to potential buyers who would pay a good price for their harvest. Once the group decided that they would like to grow long cayenne chillies, we were able to provide them with high-quality seeds and teach them how to plant and care for their crops.

Now that the seeds have been cultivated, the seedlings are almost ready to be transplanted to the fields. But the hard work doesn't stop there. Before the chillies are ready to pick we must train the group members in the best way to harvest them and provide them with the skills and tools they need to preserve their chillies and prepare them for sale.
