Joshua's Story

Joshua and Maximilla with their children Angelina, Joyce, Japheth and Alpha. Joshua and Maximilla with their children Angelina, Joyce, Japheth and Alpha.

Joshua is a farmer who lives with his wife, Maximilla, and their four young children in Trans-Nzoia County, western Kenya. The two work together to provide for their family, growing crops to eat and sell on a plot of land given to them by Joshua’s parents.

They work hard, but with little knowledge of the best agricultural techniques, Joshua and Maximilla’s harvests are often smaller than they could be. They also struggle to find reliable buyers for their crops, so their income is low and unpredictable.

Without a reliable income, Joshua and Maximilla struggle to buy everything their family needs, such as medicine if the children get sick. They sometimes have to borrow money to buy food and their two eldest children are often sent home from school because they cannot afford the school costs. But this is all set to change. Joshua and Maximilla have recently joined a Farm Africa project called ‘Growing Futures’ that helps young farmers in their area learn how to make their farms more successful.

As part of the project, they will learn how to increase their income by growing crops that take a short time to mature and can be sold for a good price. They will also learn agricultural techniques that will help them to grow large, high-quality harvests. Farm Africa will also help the young farmers set up contracts with large-scale buyers who will pay a fair price for their produce.

Your church can help more farmers transform their lives this Harvest.

Since 2011 Growing Futures has supported over 3,000 young women and men in Trans-Nzoia East, western Kenya to become successful farming entrepreneurs.

Please fundraise for Farm Africa this Harvest and help extend the Growing Futures project to reach 2,000 more young farmers like Joshua and Maximilla learn all the skills they need to grow a better future for their children.
