This November, Richard Macdonald and Charles Reed will lead a group of senior members of the UK food industry in a 117km trek in Ethiopia’s Bale Mountains.

The Bale Mountains contain numerous boulder grooves, ridges and glacial valleys, not to mention the second highest peak in Ethiopia, Tullu Demtu, which makes for a difficult climb. Not only will the team be trekking at high altitude, they’ll also be summiting Tullu Demtu and three other peaks over 4,000m high! No easy feat – altitudes of 3,600m and above affect even the hardiest of climbers.

Farm Africa works in the Bale eco-region, which is a richly diverse landscape under threat from human activity. The Challenge team will be visiting Farm Africa projects as part of their trek, to see for themselves how the money they raise will not only help protect vulnerable natural resources, but also boost the incomes of rural communities.

Food for Good

The Food for Good campaign brings the food and hospitality industry together to respond to the global issue of hunger. Business leaders and workforces from across the industry have pledged their support to raise £5 million to help 70,000 people move out of hunger and poverty. The Bale Mountains Challenge builds on the success of the Big Beehive Build earlier this year, which kick-started sustainable honey farming businesses in Tanzania, Dig for Good and the Tanzania Highland Challenge in 2013.
