Sugar bean farming

We're helping women farmers produce more sugar beans through improved farming practices and better seeds. We're helping women farmers produce more sugar beans through improved farming practices and better seeds.

Sugar beans are a common crop in highland Uganda. Farm Africa is introducing 2,000 farmers to a new bean variety that produces big harvests and has significant potential in local and overseas markets.

The project is part of our Maendeleo Agricultural Enterprise Fund, which helps women farmers find new ways of working. We are:

  • helping them produce higher yields through better farming practices and improved seeds
  • linking them to high-value local markets such as supermarkets, schools, hotels and hospitals, where they can sell fresh and dried beans
  • using lessons they learn from selling to the Ugandan market to help prepare for entry into export
  • improving the amount of nutritious food available to eat
  • increasing the number of local business and employment opportunities
  • boosting income that women can use to pay school and household expenses.
