Passion fruit production and marketing

Passion fruit is one of Kenya’s top three export fruits. However, a combination of poor planting and orchard management, and increasing plant disease and pests, means many Kenyan farmers don't earn as much as they could from the fruit.

And when they do have produce to sell, farmers often struggle to access markets and gain high prices for their passion fruit.

Packaging and processing the fruit is one way of making it more valuable. But farmers are often not familiar with these techniques.

Off to market

To help women farmers earn as much as possible from their passion fruit, Farm Africa

  • helped increase yields by up to five times by introducing better seed varieties and improving orchard management
  • established seed nurseries to distribute better seedlings and training other farmers how to use them
  • helped increase the value of the passion fruit and provide employment by establishing packaging and processing centers
  • helped to ensure better prices by creating links between farmers and buyers, as well as setting up kiosks in major towns so women farmers could sell directly to their customers.
