Muhammed's story

Muhammed Hussein lives with his wife and 10 children in southern Ethiopia. Rainfall can be unreliable in the area, and the land is difficult to farm.

Until recently, Muhammed was reliant on government food aid, and struggled to make ends meet. Farm Africa has been working with Muhammed to help him feed his family in the long term and save up some money for their future. He received 10 chickens, as well as training in the latest farming techniques to increase the size of his pepper harvest, which has been flourishing:

"With my first pepper harvest I bought land. With the second I bought the motorcycle and the haricot beans. I use the motorbike for business: I charge 10 Birr to take somebody into town on the motorbike. Now I am waiting for the third harvest... "

Brighter futures

Muhammed and his wife are confident that with the profits from their livestock and their improved harvests, they will be able to provide a better future for their family:

“Previously, if emergencies happened we had to go to local lenders and pay high interest rates. Now, we can use our savings. We are planning to send our children to a better school and we now have a dairy cow."

“The children never go hungry now. Before, it was a big problem. Before the project, especially from May to August, there were critical food shortages... Nowadays I am forcing the children to eat. Their favourite food is injera made with maize and sorghum.”

You could help another family like the Husseins to grow themselves out of hunger. By giving a gift of £60, you could help provide a farmer like Muhammed with enough seeds to turn two acres of barren land into nutritious food crops.
