Suffolk school gets its wellies on to help give hunger the boot in Africa

07 October 2014

Pupils don their wellies for exciting harvest festival charity fundraising event

On October 9, one hundred pupils and staff from Stradbroke Primary School in Suffolk are helping African farmers break the cycle of hunger through an action-packed welly-themed fundraising event.

The money raised on this exciting day will go towards ‘Give Hunger the Boot’, a fundraising appeal for the charity Farm Africa, which is working with smallholder farmers across eastern Africa to help end hunger, for good.

Pupils will attend a special Harvest Church service, where they will be sharing what they have learned about food from all over the world. Empty wellies will be collection buckets for ‘Plenty of Twenties’ later in the morning at their ‘Wonderful Welly Walk’, when pupils and parents are invited to complete ten laps of the school field. This will help to clock up miles for the ‘Great African Welly Walk’, which aims to see fundraisers from all over the country walk the same distance as the entire coastline of Africa!

The children, aged between four and eleven, have also been hard at work at home to prepare their welly templates for a colourful welly decorating competition.

“The children are really excited to wear their wellies in support of such an important cause,” saysHead of School Linda Walsh, “We support Farm Africa through our harvest appeal because they provide communities in eastern Africa the skills they need to dig themselves out of poverty.”

“Give Hunger the Boot is a really fun and engaging way for the pupils here to appreciate that some children in the world are less fortunate than they are, and that if we work together there’s something we can do about it. We’re all very excited to put on our wellies and get involved!”

To encourage schools to take part, Farm Africa has created some really fun and engaging free downloadable teaching resources, designed to help connect school children taking part in the campaign with the lives of children in Africa.

The extraordinary support from Stradbroke Primary School will generate important funds that Farm Africa can use in its work, like training farmers how to grow and produce more food, increase their harvest yields and move out of hunger.

About Farm Africa

Farm Africa believes that Africa’s farmers can feed Africa’s people. It provides solutions before hunger becomes an emergency, investing in farmers to give them the tools and skills they need to feed their families. It also trains farmers’ groups in how to market and sell what they farm so their families see change not just for this harvest but for years to come.
