Genet's story

Genet and her children Genet and her children

In Ethiopia many women like Genet live below the poverty line, with less than £1 a day to cover all their food, housing and daily costs. This means they often go to bed hungry.

Far too often, all Genet’s family has to eat is a few mouthfuls of injera – a pancake made from grain and sprinkled with salt. It stops her and her childrens’ stomachs twisting with hunger for an hour or two.

Genet and her family live in Tigray, northern Ethiopia. The land is dry and rocky, which makes growing enough to feed a family and earn a good income almost impossible. Genet is resilient and resourceful, and manages to grow a small amount of maize to make her injera.

But it’s not enough and she’s worried about how much longer she can continue to feed her family.

But all that is set to change. With your support we could provide Genet with goats, which will help her change her family’s future. Goats are particularly well adapted to the harsh conditions in Tigray.

Their milk will provide nutrition for Genet’s children and she will soon earn enough money from the kids her goats produce to feed her family three nutritious meals a day. As Genet’s income increases, she will be able to save enough to buy her family clothes and medicine, and send her children to school.

I will use the income from my goats to provide for my children. It is my dream to one day send them to college

Genet from Tigray, Ethiopia

We’ve already been training Genet in how to look after her goats, and she’s been working hard in the intense Ethiopian heat building her goat house. All she needs now is her goats.
