Running and cycling event FAQs

The Farm Africa events team is always here to help, and you can contact us at events@farmafrica.org or 020 7430 0440 if you have any questions about signing up or fundraising for an event.

But before you get in touch, please take a look at our FAQs below, as there may be an answer to your question:

What's the difference between a 'guaranteed charity place' and an 'own place'?

Farm Africa purchases a small number of charity places every year in a variety of events which we then offer to dedicated fundraisers. In order to secure your charity place you will need to fill in an application from and commit to a minimum fundraising target. You can find a list of our guaranteed charity places here. Own place participants secure their places directly with the race organisers and we ask that you raise what you can.

How do I sign up for a charity place with Farm Africa?

Signing up to #TeamFarmAfrica is easy! Just go to our runs and cycles webpage, pick the event you’d like to take part in and click ‘sign up now’. Please note that your application is subject to approval by our events team. We will let you know the result of your application as soon as possible - ideally within three working days. If you are applying for a place in the Virgin London Marathon we will advise you on the success of your application when the ballot is drawn in early October.

Can I run the London Marathon for Farm Africa?

The London Marathon is one of the most popular events in the UK and there is a huge demand for places. We aim to allocate our London Marathon charity places as fairly as possible however we only have a very limited number of places available and unfortunately we are not able to guarantee a place to everyone who applies. To give yourself the best possible chance of getting a #TeamFarmAfrica charity place, please sign up here and give us as much information as you can about why you would like to run for Farm Africa, how much you realistically think you can fundraise and how you plan to do so. We will be accepting applications until early October. Please contact our events team if you have any queries about the application process.

I want to take part in an event but it's not listed on your website. Can I still take part for Farm Africa?

Absolutely - we’d love to have you! Farm Africa only buys places in a very small number of the hundreds of cycles and runs around the UK but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be part of #TeamFarmAfrica. If you’d like to take part in an event not listed on our website feel free to let us know using our own place sign up form. You can also find events local to you on the Run Britain and British Cycling websites.

I have secured my own place in a run, can I run for you?

Of course! As an own place participant you’ll get all the perks of being part of #TeamFarmAfrica without a minimum fundraising amount or registration fee. Please let us know here so we can get you signed up.

Why do I have to commit to raising a minimum amount?

Farm Africa makes a significant investment in sporting events every year and it is important that we know how and when funds are coming in so we can plan accordingly. We set a minimum sponsorship amount to make sure that we reach our financial targets and make a significant return on these investments, ensuring that we can continue to raise as much as we can to support our projects in eastern Africa.

What happens if I don't meet my minimum fundraising pledge?

Farm Africa incurs a cost for every place we buy and we can be left out of pocket if event participants do not meet the minimum fundraising pledge. We also want to ensure that the maximum amount possible goes directly to Farm Africa. For this reason it is vital that you raise the funds that you committed to when you accepted the charity place. If you are worried about reaching your target please let us know as soon as possible so that our friendly events team can support you with your fundraising. Our fundraising pack also has lots of great ideas on how to reach your target.

Do I need to pay anything now?

If your application for a charity place is accepted, we will send you a sign up form and ask you to pay a registration fee, the cost of which is dependent on the event. This registration fee helps us to cover some of our costs, off-sets the VAT we pay on event places and ensures that you are committed to being part of #TeamFarmAfrica.

Does Gift Aid count towards my fundraising target?

Unfortunately we are not able to rely on income from Gift Aid as claims are at the discretion of the UK government. As a result Gift Aid does not count towards your target however we do ask you to encourage your supporters to tick the Gift Aid box as it is an important source of additional income for Farm Africa.

What fundraising materials are available and how do I order them?

There are lots of different materials available to help you with your fundraising, including balloons, collection boxes, posters and stickers. To request materials, get in touch on 02078415163 or drop us an email.

My friends and I would like to take part and fundraise as a team, is this possible?

At Farm Africa we think that taking on a challenge is always easier when you’ve got someone sweating alongside you. Every member of your team will need to complete an application form and pledge to reach their individual fundraising target however you are more than welcome to fundraise together. Please note we are unable to guarantee places to everyone who applies.

How do I withdraw or defer my place?

For some events it is possible for participants to defer their entry in a race until the following year. You will need to contact the event organisers to arrange this or look in your final instructions magazine. Once you have withdrawn with the race organiser please email us so that we can update our records. If you are withdrawing from a charity place please ensure you let us know as soon as possible so that we can reallocate this place to another participant. Any sponsorship money collected should be returned to your sponsors or forwarded on to Farm Africa. We may be able to transfer this to sponsorship for another event – this is at the event manager’s discretion.

Is there a fundraising deadline?

We ask that you pay in your full fundraising amount within one month of your event.

Please let us know if you are not going to be able to pay in your money on time for any reason.

How do I send you my sponsorship?

You can find more information on paying in your money here.

If I have any other questions, who do I contact?

We’d love to hear from you! Give our events team a call on 02078415163 or drop us an email if you have any questions, comments or concerns. Thank you for your support! We look forward to having you as part of #TeamFarmAfrica.
