#GivingTuesday: 29 November 2016
After a weekend of sales shopping on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday is a global day of giving back.
And this #GivingTuesday, you can make a difference by making a donation to help farmers like Kaamila not just survive, but thrive.
Kaamila lives in the lowlands of the Bale Eco-region in Ethiopia. But every year, from December to February, the grass on which her cattle survived would completely dry up, leaving nothing but dust. She had no choice but to leave her home and travel with her family and all her belongings to the forest 30km away in the highlands, in search of food and water for the cattle.
The journey to the highlands not only endangered the lives of Kaamila’s cattle, but also her family – away from the safety of their home they would camp outside, sleeping under canvas in freezing temperatures.
But this year, Kaamila won’t be making the journey to the forest. We’ve helped her community to establish a rangeland management committee to restore grassland in the lowlands, so that there is enough food for their cattle all year round.
And staying at home isn’t just more convenient, it’s safer - and allows Kaamila’s children to carry on with their education uninterrupted rather than missing months of school each year.
What's more, staying home means less damage to the already endangered forest. And it means Kaamila can at last earn a decent living and has a chance of escaping poverty. Her cows are healthier and have doubled in value. And she's now home during the planting season so is able to grow and sell maize.
This #GivingTuesday, we’re raising money to help reach more farmers like Kaamila. Because with the right support, we can help farmers not just to survive, but thrive.
