Newsletter March 2014

Dear Subscriber Name,

My name is Zemach Getahun and I am proud to be Farm Africa’s Gender and Business Development Advisor. I don’t know if you’re aware, but tomorrow is International Women’s Day. It is for this reason that I am writing to you today.

My work focuses on helping rural women across Ethiopia develop business skills and earn a living from their crops and livestock. It's incredibly important for organisations like Farm Africa to support women farmers, as it is estimated that closing the gender gap in agriculture could reduce the number of hungry people in the world by between 12% and 17%. That is why we design projects to empower women.

Below, you can read about how we're honouring International Women's Day here in Addis Ababa, including hosting a Gender Learning Bazaar. And I hope you will also enjoy reading about Masho and how she is helping women in her community to grow their incomes.

Thank you so much for supporting Farm Africa and the women we work with.

Zemach

Celebrating International Women's Day

I hope that you agree that the statistic above shows just how important it is to make sure that our programmes help women reach their full potential.

To highlight how important closing the gender gap is to us, we held an award ceremony at our Gender Learning Bazaar to recognise the projects and people who are making the most progress towards this. And we were lucky to hear from farmers involved in our project about their experiences.

I will also be honouring International Women's Day by attending the UN’s ‘Commission on the Status of Women’ in New York. I will be participating in the NGO consultation day, sharing my experiences from Ethiopia and learning from other organisations.

An inspiring woman

I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you about a woman called Masho and the difference she is making in her community.

After hearing about a Farm Africa project starting in her area, Masho brought her neighbours together to form the Obitsu Village Savings and Loans Group. With training in key business skills and access to credit, the women are now able to invest in growing their farming businesses and incomes.
