Newsletter September 2015

Dear Supporter,

This month I'm excited to let you know about the launch of our new From the Field hub, which is available for you to browse online. From the Field gives you the chance to read personal stories from farmers whose lives have been transformed, thanks to your support.

In the hub, you will find inspirational stories and images showing how, with just some seeds or livestock and a little training, farmers have been able to lift their families out of a life of hunger and poverty.

Read how resourceful co-operatives are working to launch new local livestock markets, how women are weaving their way to wealth, and how innovative new crops are helping communities grow huge harvests.

A gift from you will mean that in the future, more farmers like the ones you can read about below will be able to change their lives forever.

Thank you on behalf of all of the families we work with.

In Ethiopia, chickens rule the roost!

60-year-old Kidan’s life changed dramatically at the start of this year when she received 15 chickens from Farm Africa. She used to find it hard to grow enough food on her rocky land to survive, and needed a way to support herself into old age.

Soon after she joined the project, Kidan received training in chicken rearing and building a chicken house. She also started to receive ongoing support from Hagos, who Farm Africa has trained to supervise the chicken rearing project. Kidan's chickens will soon start brooding, meaning that she will have a stable income and a business to grow.

Weaving a way out of poverty

Agnes Sanka’s four years of working with Farm Africa have seen incredible change. Agnes’s family used to struggle for a reliable income, as they found it hard to grow enough crops on their small area of land.

But Farm Africa began to provide Agnes with the support and training she needed to turn her raffia weaving skills into a growing business. Agnes can now rely on a steady income from the beautiful baskets, bags and mats she makes by weaving raffia from the local forest.

Beatrice's green grams garden grows

Beatrice Kimwele is secretary of the Kevithe Women’s Group – a group of 29 female farmers living in eastern Kenya’s Kitui county. With no agricultural training, Beatrice used to struggle to reap a harvest healthy enough to provide her family with the income they needed.

Last year, the Women's Group started to receive training from one of Farm Africa's field officers, learning which crops thrive in Kenya's dry climate. Beatrice’s family has gone from living a hand-to-mouth existence to reaping a harvest that is healthy enough to provide them with three meals a day.

Read about how Beatrice and her fellow members can now look forward to a brighter future for their families
