Increasing income with sesame products

We have just heard from our team in Tanzania’s Mbugwe district that our sesame farmers have quadrupled their income by turning their sesame crop into products like drinks, snacks, soap and flour that can be sold for a good price all year round!

Farm Africa provided ten machines which extract oil from the sesame, and trained 440 farmers in using these machines. With their hard work, they learnt how to process their sesame into various products, which earn a higher price than raw sesame alone.

The farmers then sold their new products and increased their incomes. These farming families can now afford to spend more money on nutritious food, medicines and school costs.

Promoting mushrooms to the Tanzanian market

Farm Africa's mushroom farmers recently treated residents of Babati and Magugu to a mushroom tasting day! 15 mushroom farmers set up a stall at the local market to cook, share recipes and promote the nutritional value of mushrooms to the local community.

The farmers have been learning about growing mushrooms as part of a Farm Africa project that supports them to earn money from the forest whilst protecting its resources.

As mushrooms are not traditionally eaten in the area, many were surprised that they can be used as a staple food and wanted to share their new knowledge. One attendee said, “I never knew mushrooms can be eaten as food. I thought [they were] for foreigners and not for us. Now I know I can eat mushrooms with my family.”

The farmers now have a reliable local market to sell to, and can build a secure future from mushroom farming.
